Author and Poet
Dr. Andy served two terms as the Poet Laureate of the City of Davis, from 2014 to 2018. He is now the poet laureate emeritus of Davis.
In addition to placing poems in a great number of small journals and magazines, and anthologies such as Flatman Crooked’s Slim Anthology of Contemporary Poetics, Andy published his first book of poetry, Split Stock, in 2006; his multi-modal book of poetry, photographs, and essays, Where’s Jukie?, in 2014 (with his wife, Kate Duren), and his poetry book In the Almond Orchard: Coming Home from War in 2016. In 2011, Andy published the essay “How Twitter Saved My Literature Class: A Case Study with Discussion” in the anthology Teaching Arts and Science with the New Social Media (serialized at The Wheel). Andy’s books in progress include a book of poetry, a guide to Davis, a collection of essays, a compendium of writing advice from notable authors, and a book on parenting children with special needs. Andy regularly gives poetry readings throughout northern California, having performed his work in Berkeley, Lodi, Modesto, Sacramento, San Francisco, Woodland, Winters, West Sacramento, Crockett, Lafayette, and before 600 children in Natomas.
Andy taught the Advanced Poetry Workshop to undergraduates at UC Davis in 2001, 2011, and 2012, and has served on the poetry faculty of the San Francisco Writers Conference since 2005. Andy also informally mentors poets and authors as the Host and Coordinator of the Poetry Night Reading Series at the John Natsoulas Gallery in Davis, California, and as the host of Dr. Andy’s Poetry and Technology Hour on KDVS.
