Arts Advocacy

A long time supporter of the literary arts in and around Davis, Dr. Andy created the Arts Advocacy Award Program in 2010 and chaired the Davis Cultural Action Committee from 2009 to 2016. He supports poets through his lifetime membership with the Sacramento Poetry Center, his coordination of the Poetry Night Reading Series in the city of Davis, and his work as producer and host of KDVS radio show Dr. Andy’s Poetry and Technology Hour since 2000. Andy has been a faculty advisor to The Voice: The Undergraduate Health and Medicine Journal at UC Davis, Nameless Magazine: The Official Literary Journal of the UC Davis English Department, and the Davis Shakespeare Festival. In 2002, Andy wrote and directed Ephemera: A Play in Three Acts, leading a group of undergraduate actors and performers. He is a poet, playwright, and voice-over artist.

In 2014, Dr. Andy was named a “Cultural Icon of the City of Davis,” and his life-size portrait was painted on the wall of the City of Davis Art Garage. For ten years he taught “Writing Across Media” for Cinema and Technocultural Studies, he has taught “Writing in Fine Arts” for the University Writing Program since 2011, and he occasionally teaches a class “The Cultural Offerings of the City of Davis: A First-Year Seminar.”

Dr. Andy supports local arts organizations, The Davis Arts Center, the Smith-Lemli-Opitz Foundation, The Yolo Food Bank, and other charities and non-profit organizations.
